Downsizing Is Never Fun

Whether it's a meeting to announce layoffs or moving from a 2300 square foot house into a 192 square foot trailer and a 512 square foot army tent, downsizing is a thing to be dreaded. We got the tent set up Wednesday evening and had to be out of our house by Friday morning.

We got the kids over to my parents house Thursday morning and we started to tackle the immense job loading our belongings onto a Uhaul truck. July was a crazy-busy month with a family vacation to Salt Lake to visit Lesley's twin, Sarah and Reese's wedding, a Saturday excursion to Breaker's Water Park with the Pixtons, and various and sundry other things that occurred. For this reason and others(namely my uncanning ability to procrastinate) we were less than prepared for the tasks that we needed to accomplish on Thursday. I picked up the Uhaul around nine and Danny came over around 9:30 to help start loading the truck. Once we realized that we had way too much junk to be able to store in the tent we called around to find a storage room in Benson that we could rent to store all this stuff. We sold, gave away, and threw away a ton of our things, yet we still had too much. It's amazing when you look at all the things that you accumulate over the time that you are in your house. We had only been in the Bellatrix house for a little over three years and we still had so much stuff.

As everything goes, it takes two to three times longer to complete a task than you plan. The truck loading which was only going to take two or three hours ended up taking us all day. We loaded things that we were going into the storage room in the front of the truck and we loaded the things to be stored in the tent in the back of the truck. The plan was to stop by the tent on the way into Benson, drop off the tent stuff and then head into Benson and drop off the rest of our things in the storage unit and then drop off the truck. Since we were running late we decided to go straight into Benson to get the storage unit and then hit the tent. We got into Benson at 4:45 PM and the storage room closed at 5:00 PM. The proprietor met us in front of the office and said "You're not planning on emptying that tonight are you? Because I close in 15 minutes." To reward his hspitality we promptly left and vowed not to return to give him business. We decided to unload the tent bound items in the tent and to leave the truck on our property over night and then I would head out the next morning to find a new storage facility and unload the truck.

As luck would have it the storage facility in Mescal was still open when we reached the exit, so we called the number on the sign and the property manager promptly met us and was very accommodating. We unloaded our goods, then drove to the land and unloded the tent stuff. We headed back to Benson to drop off the truck and then returned to Tucson.

We still had a mountain of stuff in the house, the trailer was stuffed to the rafters with crud, and it was still in my driveway. Most annoying for Lesley was the fact that I still hadn't touched the shed. We were fighting an uphill battle.

We got a quick bite at my parents' house and then ran over to the Bellatrix house. At around 11 o'clock that night we decided that we would contact the renters in the morning and we would request a delay in their taking possession of the house. We returned to my parents' house and quickly fell asleep.

To be continued...

Too bad you missed loading TWO trucks, acar on the car carrier and a Suburban with the tons of Jer's stuff. It is rather amazing how much and how fast stuff accumulates. When I think that I still need to clean out our store room to get at the bee residue...I want to vomit.

Good luck. Just call the Elder's Quorum Moving company. I hear they are cheap but some things might get broke and thier insurance is lousy about paying for broken items. I know they all owe you. I remeber how many people we moved just in the three years I was there.
