We haven't seen any lions, tigers, or bears, but snake sneason has officially begun. The top set of pictures show the red racer that I ran into last Saturday when I was working in the water line trench. I had to tape the copper tracer wire to the pvc pipe every five feet along the 780 foot water line. Holman had been out with me but it was too windy for him so he went back to the trailer. As I was walking up the trench towards the well, I had my head down trying to keep the dust from blowing into my eyes. Just as I walked over the top of the hill, I was prompted to look up. I was walking in a trench that is about three and a half feet deep with dirt piled up on the sides. Those piles made the side of the trench about chest level for me. The prompting was a thought that if I were to happen upon a snake on the edge above the trench it would be able to strike me in the chest or head. Juast after I looked up I ran into the red racer. He was trying to get accross the trench. I tried to chase him away from the trench but he fell down into it. I was not done working in the trench so I had to chase him down the hill until he reached the wash and could get out. Then this morning I wa dismantling the floor where the tent had been. There was a packrat's nest in the pallets that I had seen before and had put some poison down to get rid of. As I was lifting up the pallet that had the rat's nest, I saw a small rattlesnake coiled up next to the nest. It looked like it had been smashed by the pallet so I got a stick to poke it so I could make sure. He was not dead. I ran to get my bb gun, a shovel, and Lesley and the kids. I fired three shots at him but never hit him nor did I hear the bb hit anything, so I resorted to the decapitation method. He retreated into the pallet when I approached, so I had to get him through one of the openings. I pulled him out, put his head in the dumpster and the showed him to the kids so they could see what the diamondback looks like.
I later checked out my bb gun and found that when you lower the tip of the barrel, the bb rolls right out. Looks like it is time to go get that ruger .22 that I have been wanting.
Why am I not surprised that he has a southern accent? Thanks, Pete, for the link.

Yeah, get one of them, I love mine. If you hurry you can buy the high capacity magazines before they get banned again. Next up for those slightly bigger problems than an 18" snake, the remington 870. Kim thinks you could use a southern accent at least when shooting.
